Development of The Book Wizard began in 1988 to serve the inventory control needs of a new children's bookstore in Rochester, Minnesota. The owner of the store knew that he needed some way to keep track of over 10,000 items of merchandise, but all that was available at the time were programs for MS-DOS or UNIX, neither of which are very user-friendly operating systems. As the owner of an Apple Macintosh, he knew that there was a much better way for computers to operate, but there were no bookstore inventory control programs available for the Mac. Several software companies told him that a relational database program could be used to develop the software that he needed. One company put him in contact with a programmer in Minnetonka, Minnesota, who had extensive experience writing programs for the retail environment, including a large chain of bookstores.
After several meetings to outline what the progam must do, work was begun. Before long, the first version of program was ready for testing at The Dream Maker Children's Bookseller. After several revisions, and much tweaking, the RGIS inventory service was called to conduct an inventory and all the books were imported into The Book Wizard.
Initially, there was no plan to sell the program to other bookstores, but other booksellers with Macs heard about The Book Wizard and convinced us to sell them the program. In 1997 a Windows version of the program was added. The Book Wizard has continued to evolve, with new features added and old features improved and updated. We continue to be committed to the improvement of the software and will always strive to make a great program even better.
